UPS: droni per consegnare vaccini e medicinali salvavita
UPS Foundation ha siglato una partnership con Zipline, azienda californiana specializzata in robotica, e GAVI Alliance, l’alleanza internazionale per i vaccini e le immunizzazioni, volta a testare l’utilizzo dei droni per trasformare il modo in cui i medicinali salvavita come i vaccini e le sacche di sangue vengono consegnati in tutto il mondo. Spesso, infatti, i prodotti sanitari critici deperiscono o non arrivino alle persone che ne hanno urgente bisogno. Questa partnership pubblico-privata combina l’esperienza di UPS nel campo della logistica globale, della catena del freddo e delle consegne healthcare con il network nazionale di consegne con droni di Zipline e l’esperienza maturata da GAVI nei Paesi in via di sviluppo, svolgendo attività finalizzate a salvare la vita e tutelare la salute delle persone nei luoghi più remoti del mondo. UPS Foundation ha stanziato 800.000 dollari per sostenere l’avvio del progetto in Ruanda.
“Questa nuova partnership è un ottimo esempio della capacità di innovare di UPS. La sua applicazione a una buona causa ha un enorme potenziale per essere estesa ad altre aree toccate dal network globale di UPS – ha dichiarato Iulia Nartea, country manager di UPS Italia -. Anche se è troppo presto per determinare se usi simili dei droni potrebbero trovare applicazione in Italia, una nuova porta si è aperta e siamo entusiasti delle future opportunità”.
Nel corso del 2016 il governo del Ruanda inizierà a impiegare i droni di Zipline, in grado di effettuare fino a 150 consegne al giorno di sacche di sangue salvavita a 21 centri di trasfusione nella parte occidentale del Paese. Il network nazionale di droni del Ruanda è stato inizialmente dedicato alla consegna di sacche di sangue, ma il piano è di espandere il progetto alla consegna di vaccini, terapie per HIV/Aids, malaria, tubercolosi e molti altri medicinali salvavita fondamentali. In Ruanda si prevede che l’attività di consegna con i droni salverà migliaia di vite nei prossimi tre anni, fungendo inoltre da modello applicabile in altri Paesi.
